What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced "ray-key") is a Japanese healing technique that promotes relaxation and reduces stress through gentle touch or hands hovering just above the body. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words: "Rei" meaning universal, and "Ki" meaning life force energy.
Developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 1900s, Reiki is based on the principle that a universal life force energy flows through all living things. When this energy is low or blocked, we're more likely to feel stressed, unwell, or out of balance. Reiki practitioners channel this healing energy to help restore balance and promote the body's natural healing abilities.
What to Expect During Your Session
A Reiki session is a peaceful, meditative experience that typically lasts 60 minutes:
- You remain fully clothed and lie comfortably on a massage table
- Soft music and aromatherapy may enhance relaxation
- The practitioner places their hands gently on or just above specific areas of your body
- Energy is channeled through the practitioner's hands to you
- You may experience warmth, tingling, or deep relaxation
- Each hand position is held for several minutes
- There's no massage, manipulation, or pressure applied
- Many people drift into a deeply relaxed state or light sleep
How Does Reiki Work?
Reiki works on multiple levels - physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. It doesn't treat specific symptoms or diseases; instead, it supports the body's natural healing process by:
- Clearing energy blockages
- Balancing the body's energy centers (chakras)
- Promoting deep relaxation
- Supporting the immune system
- Reducing stress hormones
- Creating a sense of peace and wellbeing
Conditions That May Benefit
Reiki is particularly helpful for:
- Stress, anxiety, and overwhelm
- Depression and mood imbalances
- Chronic pain management
- Insomnia and sleep disturbances
- Fatigue and low energy
- Recovery from illness or surgery
- Emotional trauma and grief
- Headaches and migraines
- Supporting cancer treatment side effects
- General wellness and prevention
After Your Treatment
Following a Reiki session, most people feel:
- Deeply relaxed and peaceful
- More balanced and centered
- Relief from pain or tension
- Increased energy (sometimes after an initial rest period)
- Emotional release or clarity
- Better sleep that night
Drink plenty of water after your session and allow yourself time to rest. Some people experience a "healing response" where symptoms temporarily intensify before improving - this is normal and indicates the body is healing.
